There are multiple expenditures to budget for when planning a vacation, but how do you prioritize spending? MissTravel.com polled over 36,000 members to determine which travel expense they were willing to splurge on, and food topped the list.

Experiencing local cuisine while on vacation is a must – food is the gateway to a country’s people, history and culture. An estimated 35 million people have traveled just for an authentic culinary experience and seeing travelers, photos from around the world is enough to fuel the desire to try it for yourself, no matter the cost.

Blame it on Yelp or #FoodPorn, results reveal 46 percent of travelers would rather spend their travel budget on food than activities, airfare or luxurious accommodations. Having an authentic meal or experiencing local activities could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and travelers are willing to pay the price.

When you’re visiting a new destination the last thing you’d want is to be confined to a hotel room. Travelers are seeking out distinctive experiences that offer unique insight into a new culture. Interacting with locals at a restaurant or when trying to find the best food in town is also a great way to familiarize yourself with the area and culture.

Food festivals like Oktoberfest in Germany or the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival have drawn millions of travelers seeking local culinary celebrations.

The survey revealed “experiences and activities” as the second most splurge-worthy expense. Whether it’s a guided hike to Machu Picchu or swimming with pigs in The Bahamas, results of the survey reveal an increased desire for authentic, immersive experiences among travelers.

Accommodations and airfare were respectively the last two expenses travelers were willing to splurge on. With the abundance of websites designed to find deals on plane tickets and hotels, it’s clear that destination daters would rather save on this expense and spend their extra cash delving into a new locale for all its worth.

What is your top travel splurge? Where have you experienced the best local food or unique activities?
