Your summer getaway has arrived. You have worked out for months, planned outfits carefully and the season is finally here. You can lounge on the beach for hours and dance the night away without a care in the world. One thing you should care about is your calorie consumption. No one is going to be hitting the gym at 6 am after a night of tequila shots. Here are my favorite vacay beverages with half the calories.
Rum Punch is a staple among Caribbean islands, and most places create their own spin on this popular beverage. When researching I was shocked to discover that a standard Rum Punch is less caloric than assumed. It is around the 220 mark. Many places have the mix pre-made and simply add dark rum to it. If possible avoid pre-made. No one wants a drink that has been lying around in the hot sun all day, ew. Cozy up to the bartender, and see if he can make you a fresh one. I would also inquire if they have any lower calorie white rums on hand. This will cut calories and white rum has less sugar. Sugar turns to fat, and it also leads to worse hangovers.
There is nothing I like more than sipping on Margaritas with friends, especially when we are partying in an exotic locale together. Unfortunately, drinking frozen margaritas throughout your seven day vacay is going to pack on the pounds. A standard margarita is typically around 520 calories. ALWAYS order a Margarita on the rocks and with only half the rim salted, if you are a salt fiend like myself. Ask the waiter what ingredients they use. Make sure to keep it SIMPLE. Do not order flavored anything. Your drink should include: limes, salt, Mexican limóns, tequila, Cointreau, superfine sugar and ice – that’s it. Remember simple drinks equal skinny bitches.
This pretty pink drink is a tropical take on the classic Salty Dog. I would personally recommend this as a substitute to a morning mimosa because it has right around the same calorie content but contains a higher percentage of alcohol. It’s primarily made of grapefruits which is a morning staple, bursting with antioxidants. The Salty Chihuahua contains: 4 ounces tequila, 2 ounces of orange-flavored liqueur, 3 cups of fresh squeezed grapefruits and a sliced grapefruit for garnish. This is not only my favorite drink on the list but the most fun to order because of its unique name.
The Pina Colada. It’s the epitome of a vacation and definitely delicious, but there is upwards of 500 calories per beverage. Thanks, but I politely decline. I love the refreshing taste of coconut but to the extent of 500 precious calories. The Passion Colada is a great alternative and less than half the calories. The sweet treat clocks in at about 207 calories per-serving so you can still look good in that white bikini. Ingredients in this drink are simple and most bartenders have them on hand. It includes: 2 cups of ice, 1 cup of passion fruit juice, ¼ cup cream of coconut and all the rum you want.
Mai Tai’s are a delicious concoction bursting with flavor but alas, are around the 600 calorie mark. They are also a very popular drink while traveling either to the Caribbean or the Pacific Islands. The Creme de Almond and Sweet & Sour Mix increase the calorie count in this tasty treat. A great and low calorie alternative is a “Skinny Mai Tai.” This skinny version is only a whopping 127 calories. Ask the bartender to hold the sour mix and substitute almond syrup for Creme de Almond. Try this delectable drink and you are bound to order two!
No matter where you go, if you are with the people you love you are bound to have a fabulous trip.
