Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty …

— Lovin Spoonful, “Summer in the City”

There’s nothing like a bikini and a frozen margarita in the summer sun. However, as August progresses, the unending heat may start wilting even the most lovely hothouse flower. So what’s a pampered lady to do to stay fresh and leave the dog days behind? Well, ask her gentleman to take her south of the border.

Way south. Like pass the equator and keep going. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s cool—even cold, if you might be a snow bunny—when the Northern Hemisphere is broiling in the sun. To them, Christmas is bikini season and July is time to pull out the puffy jackets. Cray, right? But true.

Check out the five destinations that will send a chill down your spine and delicious ice down your sizzling summer body. (Not to mention that cuddling with a generous gentleman is more fun when you need him to help warm you up.)

1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Remember the recent World Cup, all played in Brazil? All of those 2%-body-fat hotties running up and down the futbol pitch for 90 minutes, barely needing to pause for breath? (That is called stamina, ladies, and you know how nice that can be.) A classy lady on vacation in Brazil with her generous fellow will encounter an amazing range of temperatures to satisfy absolutely any need for outdoor activity. The country is crossed by the equator in the north and plunges toward the south pole, meaning you can go swimming in the warmer locations or skiing or anything wintry in the colder cities.

Rio de Janeiro, however, offers the hottest nightlife south of Miami. Dancing until dawn in Rio de Janeiro is de rigeur for young women. Sleeping the day away until an afternoon apertif followed by an exotic lunch or dinner before another night of fun is almost expected in Brazil. It’s like a party that ends only when you’re finished, one that you can join at any time you like.

2. Buenos Aires, Argentina

The capital city of Argentina, Buenos Aires is often referred to as “the Paris of South America.” What thoughts come to mind when you think of Paris? Do you envision the best shopping, high-end entertainment and dining choices, and beautifully chilly weather in the fall and winter. All are true of Buenos Aires as well. Like in Brazil, the further south you go in Argentina the colder it gets. Share a hot libation with your gentleman. Romantic, fun, and—best of all in August and early September—deliciously cool and comfortable.

3. Mt. Ruapehu, New Zealand

Really, your gentleman and you could choose any destination in New Zealand and it would be an enticing experience. I suggest Mt. Ruapehu because it epitomizes getting away from the “humidor meets blasting furnace” feeling in most of the U.S. in the depths of summer. We’re talking skiing down an active volcano with a million pockets of perfect powder. If you don’t like skiing, visit anywhere in New Zealand for amazing hiking in cool weather and the most striking vistas this side of the Shire. (They filmed all the Lord of the Rings movies in New Zealand, and those breathtaking vistas were not CGI.)

4. Sydney, Australia

See the Sydney Opera House, see the kangaroos, see the crocodile hunters. All of which you can do in Sydney. Other things you can do in Sydney is try to avoid horrifying poisonous toads, find Nemo, and tie your kangaroo down, sport. However, it doesn’t actually get very cool there. I include it in this list because you might think that since Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere and is right next to (awesome) New Zealand, it would be just as good of a destination. That, sadly, is not the case. Leave Down Under for your winter trip to get away from the cold back at home.

5. Antarctica

Women and their travelmates who really hate the heat might want to check out the most pristine wilderness in the world: Antarctica. A trip that used to kill entire expeditions now can be reached by cruise ship. That means luxury all the way, even if you never get off the ship. Casinos, fantastic restaurants, cool nightspots.

This cruise, however, takes you to an absolutely singular destination that still very few people have ever seen. Temperatures are, obviously, cold at the bottom of the world, but in summer it’s no colder than Virginia in the winter. Depending on what kind of travel you want to join your gentleman for, Antarctica is one place to visit that will one-up anyone else telling tales of their trips.

Penguins, sea lions, whales—you’ll see exotic creatures and mountains of ice that may be disappearing more each year. One drawback is that there isn’t much in the way of shopping on the seventh continent, so make sure your gentleman takes you around to the designer boutiques on the ship. That’ll make any lady feel nice and warm.

The fantastic voyages here are more than just vacations. They help keep you fresh and excited during the doldrums of summer by sweeping you away to cooler climes on the other side of the equator.

What are some of your dream vacation spots way south of the border?
